CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS

ITALIAN EXPLORER

(1451-1506)

Christopher Columbus was one of the greatest and most celebrated explorers of all time. In 1492, his voyage to the New World expanded our view of the world and permanently linked Europe with the Americas. His discovery and the age of exploration that followed forever changed the course of history.

THE TRUTH ABOUT COLUMBUS

Neither a perfect man, nor the historic villain that recent critics have sought to make him, Christopher Columbus was actually a man ahead of his time whose vision and discovery changed the course of world history by connecting the peoples of the world for the first time.

On this website, we will separate the myths from the facts about Columbus and share many of the historical truths that too often are obscured or ignored as his detractors attempt to reinterpret the past.

Today, the explorer is under attack as many opponents seek to make him a scapegoat for all the evils in the New World after 1492. This is not only historically inaccurate, it is unjust.

Here are some truths about Columbus the man and the attacks against him:

  • Columbus has been outrageously slandered and falsely accused of the crimes of others. The record shows he actually sought to treat the natives with respect and restrain mistreatment against them.
  • Opposition to Columbus is not a recent development. In the 1920s, the Ku Klux Klan mounted a bigoted campaign against the explorer because he was Catholic, Italian and sailed under the Spanish flag.
  • Modern attacks on Columbus are often fueled by the work of radical activist professors who seek to warp history with a predetermined political agenda.
  • Contemporary attacks on Columbus are sometimes unknowingly influenced by anti-Spanish propaganda known as the “La Leyenda Negra,” which originated in the 16th-century during English and Dutch conflict with Spain and portrayed the Spanish as brutal and untrustworthy.

Through the videos, articles and news stories provided here, we hope you will gain a more balanced and accurate understanding of what Christopher Columbus accomplished and why we continue to celebrate his achievements today. Here you will discover the truth about Columbus, which is every bit as exciting as it was when he sailed the ocean blue more than 500 years ago.
